Department of Workforce Development

Department of Workforce Development

The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) connects Kentuckians to apprenticeships, career development, education, employment and training, and prepares them to enter the workforce, advance their careers, improve job performance, and fill skills gaps. DWD also strives to help create economic prosperity for Kentucky businesses and employers. The agencies of the department--the Career Development Office, the Office of Adult Education, the Office of Industry and Apprenticeship Services, and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation--work together to provide services through the Kentucky Career Center network. The Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board (KWIB) serves to advise the Governor on workforce training and development issues and facilitates the adoption and implementation of a statewide plan to move Kentucky forward through workforce training and development.

Workforce Pell Grants

Workforce Pell Grants can prepare students for in-demand jobs paying above the state's $23 an hour median wage in areas such as healthcare, manufacturing, information technology and skilled trades.

Students interested in the new Workforce Pell Grant should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid - commonly known as FAFSA - and talk to their college/career advisors. Eligible students can receive an average of $2,200, depending on the cost of the program and individual financial need. The training period lasts from eight to 15 weeks at postsecondary institutions that meet the federal requirements. Like the Pell Grant, the Workforce Pell Grant does not have to be paid back if the student completes the program.

For a program to be approved for the Workforce Pell Grant, it must be reviewed and approved by both the Governor, in consultation with the state's workforce development board, and the U.S. Department of Education. Applications for postsecondary institutions to apply can be found here.
